Carlos Velazquez Joins Stockpile Reports® | Stockpile Reports

While Carlos won’t be working directly with customers on a day-to-day basis, the value his 3D and leadership experience brings will help shape the future of Stockpile Reports® for years to come.

Stockpile Reports® is excited to introduce Carlos Velazquez, who will be responsible for business development and partnership management as well as the aerial component of the business. Commonly referred to as a “land surveyor on steroids,” the inherent and deep knowledge and experience that Carlos brings to our team are second to none. Let us tell you more about Carlos.

Carlos comes to Stockpile Reports with nearly 20 years of business management, strategic leadership, and 3D innovation experience. Developing and implementing LiDAR systems for various industries including architecture, archaeology, civil engineering, forensic analysis, historical preservation, maritime industries, mining, nuclear, and oil and gas, we are excited to have him on the team, supporting our customers and taking Stockpile Reports to the next level.

Meet Carlos Velazquez

Carlos was born and raised in Ashland, OR, where he currently resides with his wife and two children. He graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a student, he discovered his passion for art and 3D design and has been developing this passion ever since. “I took some 3D design courses in college and they were incredibly simple for me. It just came natural. It took me a while to realize that this was a strength and skill for me.” Carlos has been developing and implementing these systems in a professional capacity ever since.

Founding his own company in 1999, Carlos has faced the challenges and abundant rewards of owning and operating your own innovative BIM and 3D services business. However, as his family has grown, life has changed, and his professional aspirations have evolved, Carlos found himself seeking new and exciting challenges and inspiring work. “I got to a point in my business, where it wasn’t really motivating me. It wasn’t inspiring me. I wasn’t finding things that I enjoyed doing,” said Carlos. “It wasn’t until this past year that I got serious about working with [Stockpile Reports], but I didn’t know how employable I was because I had been an employer for 20 years. But life is changing, my family is growing, wife and kids, and life is kind of simplifying. It’s an interesting switch [going from employer to employee] because I was constantly considered the guy that was out there cutting the bleeding edge of technology, always reaching for the stars.”

During our interview, Carlos told us about his relationship with Founder and CEO, David Boardman, and Stockpile Reports. “David called me up. He saw one of my videos on YouTube. I had created this animation of point clouds about 8 years ago and he saw the video. He was amazed and impressed by the video so he picked up the phone and called me. He started to explain his business and what he was involved in doing. What he explained to me was that he wanted to find ‘piles of stuff’ to measure, stockpiles to measure. Well, I introduced him to their very first client, Knife River, who is still their client, a very strong client too.”

For four years after Carlos and David connected, Carlos served as a technology consultant and supported Stockpile Reports from a business perspective. “I acted as an advisor for David, consulting on where the industry was going, and so on.” Not only were they colleagues, but they also developed a friendship. “David and I, we keep in contact. We are always seeing each other at conferences, we call each other regularly,” said Carlos.

With life shifting and professional desires evolving, it only made sense to explore the ways that Carlos and Stockpile Reports could support each other well into the future. When talking with Carlos, he said, “I want to emphasize that I have a huge network and David was at the top of the list. It was David that I was considering working with because of our relationship and him as an individual. He is definitely an exception in the world of business that I think shows in a lot of ways. It shows in every aspect of the team, the business, and how ultimately how successful it is. [The culture] is incredibly collaborative, and [they are] always looking for how both parties can win. [David and I] are aligned and became fast friends from the second that we met. Being able to develop that relationship, then for it to turn into something like this, it’s just been the cherry on top.”

Personal Life

Carlos and his wife, Jessica, have two children, Rylan and Scarlett, and currently reside in Ashland, OR. On Saturday mornings, they enjoy going for hikes and indulging in morning cartoons as a family. His family shares a home with two black labs, Bailey and Scia, who are 12 and 13 years old. You better believe they go on Saturday morning hikes too!

In their spare time, you can find Carlos and his family exploring the outdoors, traveling in the family RV across the Pacific Northwest, including visiting family in Idaho, and going rock climbing. Carlos also enjoys scuba diving and there are very few beautiful places that he hasn’t explored from under the surface, including the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea, and Trinidad and Tobago. When he is not exploring and traveling, he enjoys developing new art forms, including one specific project that he is currently working in the virtual reality space. Showcasing his work at local museums, the reaction is always the same, no matter the age of the person engaging, it’s always considered beautiful. “I never thought I would create something that someone perceived as beautiful and that is an incredible feeling,” said Carlos.
