Poised to take the market by storm, with its drastically improved camera and loads of new features, the new DJI Phantom 4 Pro has just started shipping.

We were able to get our hands on one last week and here are our first impressions:

  1. Higher Image Resolution

The light gathering capability, with a much larger image sensor, gives the DJI Phantom 4 Pro a major boost in capturing details and giving clearer imagery. This greatly increases performance in low-light conditions as well. Your stockpiles have never looked so good!

  2. Sharper Images

Upgraded with a mechanical shutter and mechanical aperture, the Phantom 4 Pro will give crisper shots, and do a much better job at controlling the amount of light. You’re much less likely to get overexposed images or distortion on the finer details.

  3. Obstacle Avoidance

With three sets of dual vision sensors, the Phantom 4 Pro enjoys a 6-camera navigation system (two front-facing, two rear-facing, two down-facing), and includes infrared sensors, one on each side, protecting from the left and right directions. This is up from only a front-facing and down-facing set on the Phantom 4. What this means is, with the Phantom 4, you're only getting obstacle avoidance when flying forward. With the Phantom 4 Pro you're covered in all directions.

  4. 30-minute Flight Time

Longer flight times mean less battery changes, resulting in quicker inventories. Adding an additional 2 minutes over its predecessor, the Phantom 4 Pro becomes more of a productive workhorse for your inventory management. Two minutes might not sound like a lot, but it can make a good time savings when you’re able to eke out those last few piles before changing batteries.

In Summary

While some of the improvements are moderately better, the factor that makes the biggest difference for you and your stockpile measurement considerations is the camera. Better imagery makes for the increased likelihood of clear and consistent results—especially in less than favorable conditions like low light or wind. The Phantom 4 Pro is an exciting machine and we’re glad to officially include it in our list of approved drones for Stockpile Reports Inventory Management.
